Due to its offensive nature to some, a prominent mountain in the national park is being given a new name.

Mountain in Yellowstone National Park Renamed

A famous mountain in Yellowstone National Park has received a new name after public outcry. The mountain, previously called Mount Doane, has now been renamed First Peoples Mountain in honor of the indigenous tribes connected to the area. This change follows criticism of the mountain’s original name, linked to U.S. Army officer Henry Doane, who led a massacre of Native Americans in 1870.

A Step Toward Reconciliation

The U.S. Board on Geographic Names unanimously approved the new name, as announced by the National Park Service. Mount Doane, towering at 10,551 feet, was named after Doane, who led the Marias Massacre, which killed many members of the Piegan Blackfeet tribe in northern Montana. Doane’s actions and his boastful attitude about the massacre made his name a symbol of violence against indigenous people.

Advocacy for Change

For indigenous groups, this name change is a crucial step in addressing the dark history tied to the mountain. The Great Plains Tribal Chairman’s Association, representing 16 Sioux tribes, spearheaded the campaign for the renaming in 2018.

Piikani Nation Chief Stan Grier stated, “This name change is long overdue… we all agreed on ‘First Peoples Mountain’ to honor the victims of such inhuman acts of genocide.”

A Dark Chapter in History

The Marias Massacre, in which Doane’s troops killed mostly women, children, and elders, remains a painful chapter in American history. The renaming of the mountain is part of a broader effort to confront past atrocities and acknowledge the deep, enduring connection indigenous peoples have to the land.

Moving Forward

Renaming landmarks like First Peoples Mountain signals a commitment to reconciliation and respect for indigenous history. It’s an important step toward a more inclusive future. What do you think of this change? Do you consider it a necessary step in light of the historical context?
